I can’t believe this song is already 10 years old.

Bulla Ki Jaana - Rabbi Shergill
Rabbi (2000)

For those of you who don’t know/never heard of Rabbi, he’s like the Matisyahu of India ha. I remember when he first released this video…it was love at first audio wave. The song title means “Bulla (God), I know not who I am” it can also be understood as “God only knows who/what I am.” Rabbi continues to say what he isn’t…”Nor am I a believer inside a mosque, Nor am I in the rituals of the infidel…” he confides that  “Secrets of religion, I have not known/ From Adam and Eve, I am not born/I am not the name I assume/Not in stillness, nor on the move” and concludes that “I am the first, I am the last/None other, have I ever known/I am the wisest of them all/Bulleh! do I stand alone?”

Funny thing is, I was confused about who I was as a high schooler when I first heard this and four years later in college, I’m still confused. I’ve come to the conclusion that we’re all confused. Each one of us has no damn clue who we are. We just spend our lives answering that question only to realize the answer was within us the whole time.

**FYI It was originally sung by the great Baba Bulleh Shah.
