“On a Plain” by The Album Leaf // Originally by Nirvana (2011)
Jimmy LaVelle’s The Album Leaf are pretty consistent when it comes to making lovely dream pop and post-rock sounds. Knowing this, I was pretty surprised to see them on the tracklist for “Come As You Are: A 20th Anniversary Tribute To Nirvana’s Nevermind” beside a majority of heavier, harder hitting bands. That being said, I was not surprised to hear The Album Leaf turning in the best cover (by far) of the bunch. Stripping the song clear of near everything but the somber tone and melody, LaVelle reconstructs it as a folk-y, electronic dream pop song. Like some haunting lullaby from an alternative universe where Kurt Cobain grew up a decade later and obsessed over Warp records releases instead of Pixies and The Vaselines.

Lovely cover; shockingly, even more depressing than the original.
