It’s funny - when news first broke that James Mercer was leaving the Shins to hook up with Danger Mouse, I wasn’t all that suprised. No one was, really. It just sort of seemed obvious, didn’t it? Of course they’d make an amazing team.

But let’s be honest: no one could tell you why they thought that, let alone hazard a guess at what their collaboration would eventually sound like.

And then this slice of cinematic masterpop comes drifting through our speakers and everything was as it should be: lush in scope yet angular in its execution, “The Mall and Misery” (and by extension the entire album) is a perfect mirror reflection of the best parts of its creators. I’d say something like “these two were made for each other” but I’m really getting worried at the number of kindred spirits Danger Mouse has out there.

I suppose that should make me feel crippling loneliness but with music as good as this, who really cares?

Truth is, I knew nothing of these two before apart from Gnarls Barkley, but god, that’s one of the best surprises of 2010… and I don’t care about listening their previous products. I just want to know what comes next!
