Update: first listen done. Valtari, expecially as we near the end, is the missing link between a Sigur Rós and a Jónsi & Alex record. i needed just that for the coming days.

Project One, the record by the band led by Eric Triton, is out on all major streaming sites. as i mentioned earlier this month, this band from Mauritius takes a novel route by mixing acoustic guitar, tabla and other uplifting percussions with lyrics in Mauritian Creole. Eric Triton calls the style ‘sega blues’, sega being the name given to traditional music from my little island.

while the music in itself is a new combination, what appeal even more are the words. these songs deal mainly with serious issues in a lingo easily grasped by the whole local population. (culture, religion, alcohol, environment, corruption…)

Rahul Giri and Tanvi Rao. remember these names. from Bangalore, India, these two have been spent too much time listening to Massive Attack and Portishead. plus their recent mixtape for Wild City comprises some of my best: James Blake, Radiohead, King Creosote & Jon Hopkins…

then came that tweet last week from Mr. Rahman himself; that’s how i found Sulk Station.

so Rahul Giri & Tanvi Rao make this duo trip-hop duo called Sulk Station, bringing a sound that i’d never have expected to come out of India.

bindiya in particularly steps out of the lot…for the vocals, for the minimalist use of ghoongroos, the progressive buildup, and its sheer capacity to keep me in a contemplative state.

India suddenly seems like the place to be for fresh indie music.
