My favorites of 2010 - Bollywood Version

2010 was a year of small successes and big fails in Bollywood. all major big productions albeit My Name is KHAN were disappointments. what worked? small-budget ventures set in small Indian towns and villages. thus my picks for this year are Udaan, Ishqiya and Peepli [LIVE].

others that took me by surprise for various reasons are Striker, LSD: Love Sex Aur Dhokha, Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai and Teen Patti.

that said, i’ve missed a few movie this year (Do Dooni Char, Well Done ABBA, Guzaarish, Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey, Jhootha Hi Sahi, Band Baaja Baaraat); some movies have been major let-downs (Raavan, Karthik Calling Karthik, Kites, We Are Family, Raajneeti); and some movies have been complete wastes of time (Dabangg, Chance Pe Dance, Lamhaa, Badmaash Company, Housefull, Golmaal 3, Action Replayy). i’m considering not even watching Tees Maar Khan this time only because publicity has been too aggressive for such uninspiring trailers.

on the musical side, here are those albums that I didn’t mind carrying along with me this year.

Amit Trivedi - Udaan
Amit Trivedi - Aisha
Vishal-Shekhar - Break Ke Baad
Vishal-Shekhar - Anjaana Anjaani
Vishal Bhardwaj - Ishqiya
Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy - My Name is KHAN

again I’d like to remind you that I’m considering albums as a whole. it’s not like we didn’t have a Munni Badnaam or a Sheila Ki Jawani but these don’t make successful albums.

on a fairer note, these albums too were pretty refreshing, but just didn’t make it. i might be harsh on A.R. Rahman but his music didn’t strike a chord with me this time.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali - Guzaarish
Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy - Karthik Calling Karthik
Vishal-Shekhar - I Hate Luv Storys
Various Composers - Striker
A.R. Rahman - Jhootha Hi Sahi
A.R. Rahman - Raavan
A.R. Rahman - Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa

to wrap this up, 2010 has been the year of small desi productions and above all, the year of Amit Trivedi. he revealed his true talent with Dev.D in 2009 and hasn’t stopped since.

bollywood ballads - new mix on 8tracks

Bollywood truly went acoustic in 2010 with composers including acoustic/unplugged versions of their songs at the end of every record. This is particularly true with the duo Vishal-Shekhar.

Here’s some of the best recent campfire songs straight from India / Pakistan:

Dhoop Ke Makaan (Acoustic) - Hitesh Sonik, Sunidhi Chauhan, Shekhar Ravjiani
Break Ke Baad | Vishal-Shekhar | 2010

Tujhko Jo Paaya - Mohit Chauhan
Crook | Pritam | 2010

Aas Paas Khuda (Unplugged) - Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, Shruti Pathak
Anjaana Anjaani | Vishal-Shekhar | 2010

Tu Hi Re - Colonial Cousins
MTV Unplugged | 1997

Sham - Nikhil D’Souza, Amit Trivedi
Aisha | Amit Trivedi | 2010

Bin Tere (Reprise) - Shekhar Ravjiani
I Hate Luv Storys | Vishal-Shekhar | 2010

Guncha (Unplugged) - Mohit Chauhan
Main Meri Patni Aur Woh | Mohit Chauhan | 2005

Kaun Tha - Atif Aslam
Meri Kahani | 2008

Kasam [Unplugged Version] - Adnan Sami
Teri Kasam | 2004

It’s made my career! I can chill for a few months now, because it validates my journey so far.

Amit Trivedi’s reaction to the congrats bouquet from A.R. Rahman upon winning this year’s National Award for best music director.

Amit Trivedi - Udaan Theme

I’ve just watched Vikramaditya Motwani’s directorial debut and Anurag Kashyap’s production Udaan. I’m blown away. This movie is meant to be felt. It depicts a father-son relationship and its frustrations with great sensibility. After seeing this one, you understand why Udaan was presented at the Cannes film festival. (Indian films hadn’t been in the official selection for years.) It’s got the right pace and never fails to send chills down your spine.

As for the music, Amit Trivedi yet again proves that he’s establishing himself as a prominent music director in Bollywood. Indeed, for me, the most memorable tunes this year have come from Vishal-Shekhar and Amit Trivedi.

I give you the main theme from the movie. It’s been used at various cues in the story, mainly to sum up the actor’s hardships, sometimes in a loud steel factory, sometimes while he’s alone glancing at his poetry.

Monthly Top 5 albums - July 2010

I didn’t listen to lots of new albums this month. Mainly because it’s holidays; my routine has been messed up. Also, I’ve been listening to Dan Brown’s The Lost Symbol on audible.com and this time, I’ve even managed to sleep on the plane unlike 2 years ago. However, a few masterpieces managed to squeeze in. Here we go.

July has been Amit Trivedi month. Kudos to him for bringing new sound to bollywood. His sound is crude, rock-based. He doesn’t use Indian classical music. He barely uses orchestras apart from his theme songs, which could turn out to be a disadvantage for his moving further in the industry. But his tunes are catchy, inspiring and easy to hum. He will go far and very fast! He had two movie soundtracks released last month.

Amit Trivedi - Udaan (2010)
Amit Trivedi - Aisha (2010)

Two different movies with different themes and Amit scores high marks in both. Udaan has a light soundtrack with a recurrent combination of instruments all along. I hope it’s Cannes tag will allow it a wide distribution territory. Aisha is more of the typical bollywood with new freshness breathed in by both the cast and the music.

The National - High Violet (2010)

This album has been waiting for a while in my Spotify bookmarks. I finally gave it a try and I was really satisfied. High Violet is for those who’ve fallen for Bon Iver or Noah and the Whale. In other words, High Violet is a sad affair that has been doing really well in the charts this year.

Danger Mouse & Sparklehouse - Dark Night of The Soul (2010)

Dark Night of the Soul, the mysterious album from Danger Mouse, Sparklehorse and David Lynch finally got an official album this summer after an initial announcement for spring 2009. It took more than a year to come out because of a dispute between EMI Records and producer Brian Burton (a.k.a. Danger Mouse). The album features a wide range of singers including James Mercer of The Shins, The Flaming Lips, Julian Casablancas of The Strokes, Frank Black of the Pixies, Iggy Pop, Nina Persson of The Cardigans, Suzanne Vega, and David Lynch. Choose the right moment (you know…that moment when life seems dim) and listen to the album. It grows really fast into you.

Vishal Bhardwaj - Omkara (2006)

I’ve kept a spot for the genius filmmaker and music composer who i revisited again this month via Omkara. I happened to buy the DVD of the movie in Paris and we sat down to watch it again 2 days ago. Naina Thag Lenge and Jag Ja Ri Gudiya were already favourite tracks but this time I payed attention to the rest. There’s not a single composition from Vishal Bhardwaj that I’ve hated… (let’s not count The Blue Umbrella, shall we?)

Motumaster!!!!

yashi2612:

Track from Amit Trivedi’s score for Udaan

This was love at first sound! Amit Trivedi is having a Rahman-esque start to his very promising career. It takes a lot of talent and vision to produce a new kind of sound.

The unconventional lyrics are written by none other than Anurag Kashyap! And they are brilliant!
