i did my qawwali debut last night with John of Zighur Hat and his family of musicians. i might have started a tad too high on the pitch but settled pretty well in the end.
that was a great first experience singing urdu songs in front of complete strangers…and a reminder to start the riyaaz (daily practice) again; those alaaps need much polishing.
in any case, there is space for sufi music here in bordeaux!
This concert is going to be so heavy, and so incredibly deep that I can hardly wait. For now, feast your eyes & ears on this half an hour video filmed by the always respectful troupe of Vincent Moon & Co. I promise you, it’s worth your time.
I had bought this live the moment the band posted it! indeed great acoustics and the sound’s in tune with what we got from Candor/Clamor.
Glad you posted it :)
Balmorhea | Untitled (Live At Sint-Elisabethkerk)
“Epic” may be an overused word lately, but I submit that this track off the latest work from Austin’s Balmorhea is exactly that. This Untitled track is part of a live set the band played in Germany’s Sint-Elisabethkerk, which must have been an absolute joy for the band to perform in. You can hear each drum beat splashing throughout the sanctuary thanks to the building’s amazing acoustics, definitely making this live album one worth owning.
You can find the full thing over at Balmorhea’s bandcamp, and is probably a great place to start if you’re just getting into their collection.

tonight’s the last time the band is playing with my brother. he’s won’t be in Bordeaux after that. here’s the setlist of the songs we’re covering for this mini-show.
Update - Encore included:
Jaadu - Faiz Ali Faiz & Titi Robin - ARTE Live Web
As of now, you have 177 days to check out the meeting of these two exceptional talents which was filmed at Au Fil des Voix festival on Feb 16 2011.
The association with Titi Robin brings a new, more popular, taste to Faiz Ali Faiz’s qawwali. It’d be a crime to miss this 1 hour concert.
An Oléo Films production.
Trilok Gurtu au Rocher de Palmer
Bordeaux has been grateful to me lately. after Paco de Lucia, i got to watch another legend last night. at le Rocher de Palmer, Trilok Gurtu’s mastering of rhythm was a slap to the face of aspiring musicians. he’s just exceptional. i never saw someone playing a beat on battery and saying completely different tabla bols at the same time!
he also lives up to his nickname of “serial collaborator” always exploring new possibilities with musicians of different cultural backgrounds. but, mind you, this is seriously complex rhythm that was hard to follow at first. his songs, mainly from latest release Massical were interspersed with mindblowing solo percussion performances. in the end, i just let myself go in his world of endless possibilities.
Trilok Gurtu, as a showman, is fun to watch too. (let’s forget the dumb crowd that clapped after he first tuned his tabla) he jokes about politics, he loves good wine, and managed to get a French crowd to sing tabla bols. at the second encore, with him sitting on his cajon, everyone in the concert hall was humming his 1998 song Brazilian. one can see he’s enjoying his craft.
On stage yesterday were:
Trilok Gurtu - drums, tabla, djembe, frame drums, vocals, cajon etc
Carlo Cantini - violin, melodica
Roland Cabezas - electric guitar, vocals
Johann Berby - electric bass
Andy Suzuki - keyboard, saxophone
Huge thanks to Ugo of ugoamez.com for this photo.
Beirut’s Nantes covered by Les Gens de Lafontaine
Here’s a glimpse of what you could hear at my place last Saturday. For a year now, we’ve been meeting once a week (almost) in my living room to play just for fun, discovering each other’s musical backgrounds. We’ve just been doing covers so far. Let’s hope we get to create our own stuff next year.
By ‘we’ I mean Les Gens de Lafontaine, which comprises
Gaëtan (Guitar)
Fadil (Guitar)
Me, Adarsh (Vocals)
Vincent (Drums)
Akshaye (Vocals, Piano, Melodica)
So before we all set sail for summer holidays, we decided to do our first ever live show. It’s been full of glitches here and there, but on the whole, we had a positive reaction from our friends. You have here our rendition of Beirut’s Nantes taken from The Flying Club Cup (2007).

43 Plays
I’m just back from Tchai Bar, my most common rendez-vous point in Bordeaux. Tonight I went in for a sitar-guitar-tabla show (which I mentioned early this week). To be frank, I was in to see the talented Mark Brenner play the sitar, but I made a great discovery – Leslie Herpert.
From her myspace: ![]()
Helpert has composed over 1000 pieces of music and has performed in over 200 venues. Most recently (2008) she was endorsed by the ministry of cultural affairs in Bermuda as the first musician-in-resident. Additionally, Helpert internationally performs tributes to Billie Holiday. She is a teacher of voice and yoga as well as a spoken word poet, dancer, beat-boxer, illustrator, voice teacher and novelist; her music is informed by the entirety of her artwork. She has recorded 4 full length albums spanning the years of 1999-2008. She has played in places ranging from CBGB’s in New York to Yoshi’s Jazz Club in Oakland, CA, and theaters such as Théåtre Lino-Ventura in Nice, France, The Boulder Theater in Colorado and The Variety Playhouse in Atlanta, Georgia. Her guitar is her compass.
Great husky voice. She’s got her own frivolous style and her lyrics made me sit back and smile. The sitar-guitar improvisations were pretty impressive as well. I’ve got in hand her 17-track EU Sampler which I’ll most certainly listen next morning during my commute.
Here’s the setting. A small cave in old Bordeaux, Mark Brenner on sitar and veena; Leslie Herpert on acoustic guitar and sometimes bass guitar; and a tabla player, stuck on keherwa taal most of the time. No mic: just the 3 musicians and some 30 persons in a intimate warm setting with our tchais and other infusions. I feel privileged to have been there.
Leslie recorded an EP in Barcelona in August. It’ll be available in December on iTunes.
