“On a Plain” by The Album Leaf // Originally by Nirvana (2011)
Jimmy LaVelle’s The Album Leaf are pretty consistent when it comes to making lovely dream pop and post-rock sounds. Knowing this, I was pretty surprised to see them on the tracklist for “Come As You Are: A 20th Anniversary Tribute To Nirvana’s Nevermind” beside a majority of heavier, harder hitting bands. That being said, I was not surprised to hear The Album Leaf turning in the best cover (by far) of the bunch. Stripping the song clear of near everything but the somber tone and melody, LaVelle reconstructs it as a folk-y, electronic dream pop song. Like some haunting lullaby from an alternative universe where Kurt Cobain grew up a decade later and obsessed over Warp records releases instead of Pixies and The Vaselines.

This song fit oh so well in last week’s episode of House. (S07 E16 “Out Of The Chute”)

Don’t be frightened off by the first minute or so—this cover is different from the original, but not that different. Equally wonderful, though.
Happy cover Friday!

Beirut’s Nantes covered by Les Gens de Lafontaine
Here’s a glimpse of what you could hear at my place last Saturday. For a year now, we’ve been meeting once a week (almost) in my living room to play just for fun, discovering each other’s musical backgrounds. We’ve just been doing covers so far. Let’s hope we get to create our own stuff next year.
By ‘we’ I mean Les Gens de Lafontaine, which comprises
Gaëtan (Guitar)
Fadil (Guitar)
Me, Adarsh (Vocals)
Vincent (Drums)
Akshaye (Vocals, Piano, Melodica)
So before we all set sail for summer holidays, we decided to do our first ever live show. It’s been full of glitches here and there, but on the whole, we had a positive reaction from our friends. You have here our rendition of Beirut’s Nantes taken from The Flying Club Cup (2007).

Jahmiga Dos/Doors - Whiskey Bar (2009)
I found this reggae dub remix of The Alabama Song by The Doors on Radio Nova last night. I’m no connoisseur but, man, actually having a whiskey in hand at that very moment surely added to my liking this piece :)
