Advaita is a Delhi-based band comprising 8 young men of different musical backgrounds. Their aim: creating an eclectic ensemble ready to tackle any style and mood. Since their creation in 2004, they’ve been mostly known via their live performances. Ghir Ghir is a rain song from their first record Grounded In Space which came out in 2009.
What reminded me of them today is their performance on the new show Coke Studio @ MTV, a replica of the Pakistani version. Theirs is by far the best performance I’ve seen from the show despite all the big names featuring the different episodes.

I finally saw Kiran Rao’s Dhobi Ghat tonight. This might be the best movie to come out of India this year. Mumbai has been captured in a never-before way… makes me realise that i’ll need to venture out there a 3rd time. The story was riveting…i didn’t want it to end…plus, i remained in my seat through the end credits with Gustavo Santaolalla hanging in there with his score till the every last frame.
I wonder if the score will get a proper release.

As mithai tonight, I’ve made what I’ll call ‘Panditaji ki Laddoo.’ These ain’t your regular laddoos. There’s a story behind them.
Some 7-8 years ago, there used to be regular havans at my place. One of our family priests is a lady we affectionately call Panditaji. One day before the havan, she came in the kitchen and offered her help. That’s when she made these laddoos that I’ve tried to re-assemble today out of memory. It’s made out of semolina, ghee, sugar, coconut, almonds, sesame seeds, cardamom and some milk. Don’t ask me about the proportions but in the end, I’m pretty satisfied with the taste and texture.
There, Mom. I actually did do something for Divali. I wish I were in Mauritius today where we’d have made 8 more mithais till late in the night.
Anyway, Happy Divali to you all. We celebrate today the victory of light over darkness, but above all, the victory of knowledge over ignorance.
I can’t believe this song is already 10 years old.
Bulla Ki Jaana - Rabbi Shergill
Rabbi (2000)For those of you who don’t know/never heard of Rabbi, he’s like the Matisyahu of India ha. I remember when he first released this video…it was love at first audio wave. The song title means “Bulla (God), I know not who I am” it can also be understood as “God only knows who/what I am.” Rabbi continues to say what he isn’t…”Nor am I a believer inside a mosque, Nor am I in the rituals of the infidel…” he confides that “Secrets of religion, I have not known/ From Adam and Eve, I am not born/I am not the name I assume/Not in stillness, nor on the move” and concludes that “I am the first, I am the last/None other, have I ever known/I am the wisest of them all/Bulleh! do I stand alone?”
Funny thing is, I was confused about who I was as a high schooler when I first heard this and four years later in college, I’m still confused. I’ve come to the conclusion that we’re all confused. Each one of us has no damn clue who we are. We just spend our lives answering that question only to realize the answer was within us the whole time.
**FYI It was originally sung by the great Baba Bulleh Shah.
I watched Peepli [LIVE] at Novelty theatre tonight. Let’s all agree right away that this is movie cannot work without the “Aamir Khan” tag on it. By endorsing this satire, Aamir Khan has allowed a crucial issue to be showcased to the whole world, that of farmers committing suicide. This is a global problem but India’s situation is pretty alarming. With that, director Anusha Rizvi also invokes the politicians greed for votes and the overblown zeal of news channels in India.
Peepli [LIVE] works because it is realistic. The story, most importantly its outcome, is plausible. It just shows the current situation of the poorest in India and their fate in the hands of media and politics. At no point does the writer offer solutions to the various problems. Anusha Rizvi doesn’t hesitate to mix the languages…be it the Madhya Pradesh dialect, pure Hindi, or real solid English. She intentionally uses foul language.
As for the actors Omkar Das Manikpuri is lovable as naive Natha. Raghubir Yadav as the brother is excellent as always. Malaika Shenoy is exceptional as the TV reporter.
Don’t miss this movie. It’s not your usual masala flick but after watching it, you’ll know why Aamir Khan has produced it.

“Murkh” मूर्ख is the word of the week on Courrier International.
Violence is still part of primary education in Indian classes. Teachers still treat their pupils the way they were themselves treated, humiliating them physically or mentally like with the word ‘murkh’.
