Monthly Top 5 albums - January 2012

An Indipop revival with Kailash Kher on his own label and Assamese sensation Papon getting a non-Bollywood first record; a hindi version of tamil score Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa (2010), an inspired Hans Zimmer for the new Sherlock Holmes, and a very late first listen to a Broken Social Scene album… yeah, this pretty sums up my January. despite none of these records being flawless, 2012 looks promising.

Broken Social Scene - Feel Good Lost (2001)

Kailash Kher - Kailasa Rangeele (2012)

Papon - The Story So Far (2012)

Hans Zimmer - Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows (2011)

A.R. Rahman - Ekk Deewana Tha (2012)

Tu Kya Jaane - Kailash Kher

Kailash Kher - Tu Kya Jaane

my initial reactions about this song weren’t right. ok, i’m out of the comfort zone with the backing vocals (is it Naresh or Paresh?). the strings part at the end are lame as well. however, this song retains the essence of Kailasa: Kailash Kher’s great vocals, soulful lyrics and their sufi folk stamp. and a pretty good video too. a couple of listens later, i was sold.

Rangeele - new Kailasa single for their upcoming album.

This is signature Kailasa sufi-pop material. this unique style of theirs really works. and the video is equally good!

2009 Best Albums

Here we are. With 2010 closing up, a music blogger would traditionnally publish his top 10. This is tough job. I’ve gone through countless records this year but few have remained for long on my ipod. In fact, I cannot really make a top 10 while knowing since January 2009 that nobody would make a better album than Delhi-6 other than A.R. Rahman himself. Let’s say, Blue just didn’t reach that level.

So yes, the winner is *drumroll* A.R. Rahman for Delhi-6 ! These are the songs I’ve listened to and sung the most. In fact, Rehna Tu is the best song of the year, in my opinion.
Remember, this represents solely my musical taste. I’ve been trying since the later half of this year to single out my monthly best. These albums, plus my listening stats at lastfm, have been useful in drafting this top of 2009.
You’re most welcome to refute my choice. If there’s something I’ve missed, please add it in the comments. Obviously, each person is listening to something else on his ipod. We are all in our own micro-genres. I love this diversity, but I’d also like this diversity to be shared. Never be ashamed of your musical taste.
