that’s it. i’m about to leave home in a few hours, flying back to reality. these few weeks in homeland Mauritius with family and friends have been exquisite.
this collage is an overview of my best holiday moments. i’ll publish more hopefully.

This article pretty much sums up the unique Mauritian situation. How did we manage to provide free education, transportation and healthcare without fiscal crisis? We relied on our human resource, got rid of military funding, and diversified the economy from sugar to now tourism, textile and hopefully new technologies. The author missed the offshore services though.
I’m glad he recognizes that all that development happened amidst so much religious, ethnic and political diversity. The Unité mauricienne isn’t a myth, but it’s an ongoing concept that needs constant reminding.
The author also grasps the future issues we’ll face. Mauritius needs to rely less on imports for energy and basic foods like grains and milk. On my side, I’ll also add the serious health problems that will face a population that grew too much too fast; diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and cancer have become major concerns.
What started as a lesson to the West ends with a lobby for the US to recognize Mauritius territorial claims over Diego Garcia against the British Government. Maybe this was the actual purpose of this column…
