New discovery today thanks to Nitin Sawhney’s BBC Radio 2 show where he spins the globe. This is the kind of collaboration i’m always seeking, especially when it includes indian vocals. i quote from their soundcloud page:
Kefaya is an international collective of musicians conceived and led by guitarist, Giuliano Modarelli (Italy) and pianist, Al MacSween (UK). Since 2011, they have been exploring world folk traditions through improvisation, electronics and contemporary influences and are currently in the process of finishing their highly anticipated debut album.
Bringing together their versatility and extensive range of influences, Kefaya’s appeal is in their ability to effortlessly combine musical idioms in a unique and organic way. Their sound results from a deep understanding of different musical traditions as well as extensive collaborations with artists from around the world. Their material expresses a deep social and political awareness, utilising folk songs and re-workings of revolutionary anthems.
Regular members of Kefaya include Kenny Higgins - bass (UK), Joost Hendrickx - drums (UK), Alessia Tondo - vocals (Italy), Deborshee Bhattacharjee - vocals (India), ‘Complete’ - vocal quartet (South Africa), Richard Ormrod - reeds (UK), Cormac Byrne - percussion (Ireland), Olivia Moore - violin (UK), Chico Pere - Vocals (Spain), Oliver Dover - sax/clarinet (UK), Matt Holborn - violin (UK), Glenn Sharp - guitar (UK)
