i was pleasantly surprised to find this album featured in the Air France world music selection. it’s become a classic and Michael Brook’s arrangement genius to fit the long qawallis to western ears isn’t recognised enough. now, 2 decades after its release, knowing that this record is there to welcome me on board a flight is kinda soothing.

Noorie is a tribute to Gunjan’s voice for Bally Sagoo’s remix of the 1979 song Aaja Re.
here’s the story.
everytime we would make a late night trip home, Dad would tune in to the UK station Sunrise Radio. since they couldn’t broadcast their local adverts in Mauritius, they would replace them with that song. that’s how i remember my late night trips in the backseat as a kid… i’d take off my glasses and try to dose off by watching the blurred blobs of streetlights stream by and listening to Gunjan’s voice.
via this tape i’m building on this peculiar atmosphere i’ve grown fond of.

Even more impressive knowing that the Ustad having passed away, all that was left to work with were recordings from a live performance of an early version of the song at the VH1 Witness show on April 28, 1996.
Thanks for the post!

Jaadu - Faiz Ali Faiz & Titi Robin - ARTE Live Web
As of now, you have 177 days to check out the meeting of these two exceptional talents which was filmed at Au Fil des Voix festival on Feb 16 2011.
The association with Titi Robin brings a new, more popular, taste to Faiz Ali Faiz’s qawwali. It’d be a crime to miss this 1 hour concert.
An Oléo Films production.
Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan “Taboo”
Deep and amazing, one need not know what is said to appreciate the beauty here.
The absolute master of qawwali music, Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan is emphasized by the production of Peter Gabriel.
Even though most know it from the soundtrack for “Natural Born Killers” (1994), this song has life of its own & even caused its producer to start his own excellent record label (Real World Records).

This quote comes forward in “Tracery Remix” by Nitin Sawhney (on Star Rise). Today I’ve found out from which qawwali it stems from.
Thanks Deb.
This song has a unique progression. Night Song, despite the critics on the odd pairing, is one of my favorite records.
Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan & Michael Brook - My Heart, My Life
From Night Song (1996), the second of two albums Qawwali legend Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan collaborated on with Micheal Brook. What an amazing voice.
