Monthly Top 5 Albums - January 2011

time flies! i didn’t see January go by..mainly because it was my exams month. this meant sticking a lot to wordless music.

i did go back to Sigur Rós’ Ágætis Byrjun (1998) again during my revisions. this album will remain among my all-time favorites!

Ben Chasny’s Six Organs of Admittance is coming up with a new album titled Asleep on the Floodplain in February. i reached out to Dark Noontide (2002) in the meantime and boy, i love the oriental taste he’s added to the guitar core.

next comes Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross with the score to The Social Network (2010). i thought i loved Daft Punk with TRON: Legacy until i tried this one. the minimal nature of the music with the right dose of electronics makes each track stand out. this is THE score that i’ll support for the Oscars.

there was nothing great from Bollywood since No One Killed Jessica. (well, i’ll reserve 7 Khoon Maaf for Feb) instead, it was ghazal time every morning with Timeless Classics Ghazals by Srinivas (2010). it was quite refreshing to have new takes at classics like Bhooli Bisri and Ranjish Hi Sahi. i had almost forgotten what a good classically-trained Indian singer sounded like. quite a pity that indian movies don’t require such talents anymore.

These days I’m really enjoying the album Fields (2010) by Junip. an atypical voice on moody indie folk songs that never go over the top, good drums, and a free flow between the songs, that promising for a first album. then i found out that it’s the voice of José González known for the BRAVIA song Heartbeats. no wonder i’m loving this record!
