Monthly Top 5 albums - January 2012

An Indipop revival with Kailash Kher on his own label and Assamese sensation Papon getting a non-Bollywood first record; a hindi version of tamil score Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa (2010), an inspired Hans Zimmer for the new Sherlock Holmes, and a very late first listen to a Broken Social Scene album… yeah, this pretty sums up my January. despite none of these records being flawless, 2012 looks promising.

Broken Social Scene - Feel Good Lost (2001)

Kailash Kher - Kailasa Rangeele (2012)

Papon - The Story So Far (2012)

Hans Zimmer - Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows (2011)

A.R. Rahman - Ekk Deewana Tha (2012)

Will Samson - Hello Friends, Goodbye ... Susheela Raman - Vel Fatoumata Diawara - Fatou Christina Vantzou - No. 1 Gustavo Santaolalla - Biutiful

Monthly Top 5 albums - November 2011

folks, it’s been a hectic month with so much work on the plate. at least, i got down to some great music lately. i won’t describe much of the following records. instead, i’ll say who i’m thankful to for these artists:

Will Samson - Hello Friends, Goodbye Friends (2011)
thank you, audioscrobbler via truShuffle

Christina Vantzou - No. 1 (2011)
thank you, Michael Muller of Balmorhea

Susheela Raman - Vel (2011)
thank you, Susheela for holding a show Saint-Médard En Jalles. that wasn’t far from Bordeaux. i was equally thrilled to meet Aref Durvesh after the show.

Fatoumata Diawara - Fatou (2011)
thank you, FIP Radio…the only local, eclectic and ad-free radio still around.

Gustavo Santaolalla - Biutiful (2011)
thank you, whoever is distributing these raw score takes from the movie. i hope the people at Aamir Khan Productions realize that there is a market for the Dhobi Ghat soundtrack. all albums releases mustn’t be lush events either.

A.R. Rahman - Rockstar Radiohead - TKOL RMX 1234567 (2011) Tinariwen - Amassakoul (2004)

Monthly Top 5 3 albums - October 2011

to say i’ve enjoyed 5 albums this month wouldn’t be right. truth is i’ve day in day out stuck to A.R. Rahman’s latest work for the movie Rockstar. in fact for a whole week i was obsessed with the Sufi piece Kun Faaya Kun before switching to the rest. Rockstar is a singer’s dream. i’m kind of jealous of Mohit Chauhan who’s been chosen as the only voice for Ranbir Kapoor in the movie.

i’ll add 2 more records to the list:

  1. Radiohead - TKOL RMX 1234567 (2011)
  2. Tinariwen - Amassakoul (2004)

Radiohead’s collaborative remixes for The King of Limbs is a perfect follow-up to one of the year’s best records; it’s been a perfect work companion as well for a couple of times. a must-buy IMO.

and last, Tinariwen! why? because i got to see them live earlier this month and it’s been one of my greatest experiences being there right up in front, clapping for hours alongside other people who consider these musicians as gods. incidentally, after Tassili, i had to go back and revisit their previous records.

that’s it. i don’t have five but three records despite bookmarking dozens of them. blame the sheer genius of Rahman who has kept me singing Phir Se Ud Chala, Jo Bhi Main, Saadda Haq, Kun Faaya Kun, etc during these last few weeks.

Pedro Soler & Gaspar Claus - Barlande Robag Wruhme - Thora Vukk Vijay Iyer - Tirtha Soumik Datta - Fretless Laura Marling - A Creature I Don't Know

monthly top 5 september 2011

this month has mostly been about getting back to work. i’m having my last classes (ever) at med school. the rest of my training will be within the hospital structures only. a few weeks in and i’m already feeling the pressures of the rat race for the best specialisation posts. in 8 months i’ll be competing in the french national exams and here, mock exams are already being held…which means my last weekend was a nightmare!

anyway, apart from the personal update, going back into premature revison mode meant discovering the required records for the workaholic.

Pedro Soler & Gaspar Claus - Barlande (2011)
Robag Wruhme - Thora Vukk (2011)
Vijay Iyer with Prasanna & Nitin Mitta - Tirtha (2011)
Soumik Datta - Fretless (2009)

i’ll add Laura Marling to the lot. hers was the only non-instrumental album i got to fully explore lately, and boy is she getting finer!

Laura Marling - A Creature I Don’t Know (2011)

Beirut - The Rip Tide Tinariwen - Tassili James Blake - James Blake Alex Turner - Submarine The Sea & Cake - The Moonlight Butterfly

Monthly Top 5 albums - August 2011

some just (or yet to be) released albums, a few albums released earlier this year that needed some revisiting and few songs for an indie movie composed by a soon-to-be brit pop legend… this pretty sums up my August in music discovery.

i’m certainly enjoying the new Beirut more and more. as for the new Tinariwen record which just came out, it’s been instant love. i hope to catch them live soon.

Beirut - The Rip Tide (2011)
James Blake - James Blake (2011)
Tinariwen - Tassili (2011)
Alex Turner - Submarine EP (2010)
The Sea And Cake - The Moonlight Butterfly (2011)

Botibol - Born from a Shore (2011) OST from movie Bill Callahan - Sometimes I ... (2009) Thao & Mirah - Thao & Mirah (2011) Shammi Pithia - Paredolia (2011)

Top 5 albums - July 2011

holidays finally. well, these were pseudo holidays since I was still spending my mornings in nephro…but i didn’t open a med book during those last weeks. instead, i was onto ebooks, audiobooks and…real books. it’s been one of those months where leaving my routing meant leaving my music discovery as well.

yet, i’ve managed to catch a few records during my commutes. they didn’t get the proper rundowns but that’s enough to make a top 5. you have here a kid from Bordeaux (Botibol) aiming for the likes of Grizzly Bear and Fleet Foxes; a hard hitting amalgam of styles for the crazy dark movie Shaitan; ballads from Bill Calahan (recommended by debmatcam); the collaborative album of Thao & Mirah with obvious input from Merrill “tUnE-yArDs” Garbus; and the new EP from Shammi Pithia which came out just 2 days ago and which i hooked up to instantly.

One last announcement: now that Spotify got its US release, i’ll use their links more profusely. Over here for invites!

Botibol - Born from a Shore (2011) | bandcamp

OST for movie “Shaitan” (2011) - Prashant Pillai, Ranjit Barot, etc

Bill Callahan - Sometimes I Wish We Were An Eagle (2009)

King Creosote - Diamond Mind (2011) Chinese Man - Walking With The Sun (2011 Hidden Orchestra - Night Walk (2010) Bonobo - Black Sands (2010) Yann Tiersen - Dust Lane (2010)

Monthly Top 5 Albums - April 2011

Chinese Man - Walking With The Sun (2011)
King Creosote & Jon Hopkins - Diamond Mind (2011)
Hidden Orchestra - Night Walk (2010)
Bonobo - Black Sands (2010)
Yann Tiersen - Dust Lane (2010)

April’s been a quiet month in music discovery. I’ve certainly been to a few concerts, which is why you’ll find here the latest albums by Bonobo, Yann Tiersen and interestingly, the debut record of UK-based Hidden Orchestra.

These are closely followed by the French trip-hop specialists Chinese Man who are now very comfortable at their craft. Racing with the Sun is another brillant product with atypical collaborations.

I must praise NPR All Songs Considered for the next one. Without Bob Boilen, I’d never have heard this precious work. King Creosote and Jon Hopkins are two worlds apart. It might be far-fetched to consider it in the lines of the collaborations between Michael Brook and Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, however I’m loving it more and more as time goes by. Jon Hopkins’ intervention is minimal but very effective.
